The ‘Building Skills’ project is a 15-week volunteering programme for unemployed Kirkholt residents, in partnership with Groundwork, helping to bring empty homes back into use. The project has worked with 9 people aged from 17 to 50, and 6 of those 9 are now in employment.

The programme includes:

  • a multi-trades qualification including plastering, tiling, joinery, painting and decorating
  • additional support in Functional Skills: Maths, English and Employability
  • work experience
  • job reference
  • CSCS card
  • First Aid training
  • support to find a job.

Case Study

Lee, aged 51, had been a stay-at-home father for a while. Before this he had always worked since leaving school with no qualifications.

He progressed through the plastering, tiling and joinery elements of the course. Before the end of the programme, a job became available and Lee was given advice on interview techniques, and got the job.

With his new-found confidence and motivation, Lee has now extended his contract and been successful in his application for a more senior position.

Groundwork has given me the confidence to get out and do something with my life. I finally did my English and Maths after leaving school with no exam results. I learned a lot about the construction trade and ended up with a job at the end of my course.
